C41 Relative Location of a Physical Thing

Scope note:

This class captures the relative location of a physical thing as a quality of it in relation to another physical thing providing the spatial reference.

Instances of this class can concern features of physical objects, and their position in relation to other parts of the object. It can be used to capture positions of physical objects with respect to a geographical place, providing a direction and distance, when the position of the object is known only approximately.

Should the intended relative location be social or epistemic, and not strictly physical, the sdh:C15 Epistemic Location of a Physical Thing class should be used. To capture an official domicile, legal seat of an actor, etc. the sdh-so:C28 Legal Location of an Actor class must be used.

A dedicated vocabulary of types will allow to distinguish the different types of physical relative locations (e.g. above, inclusion, adjacency, outside of, presence in, etc.). In addition, a specific property allows to add the reason(s) for the localisation. This or these reason(s) are to be considered as valid for the whole period of localisation. For more complex situations, several instances of this same class or of other classes will be used.

Examples:

The scratch is three centimetres above the handle of the cup

In First Order Logic:

  • C41(x) ⇒ C44(x)
