Intentional Situation – C2

C2 Intentional Situation

Scope note:

This class models time-related phenomena (like an election or a marriage) that happen in collective intentionality, effect changes in the social connotation of actors or things and are only perceived in specific social contexts, i.e. persons sharing the same point of view or conceptualization. A social event only exists if it P33 satisfies specific social representations, i.e. the conditions that makes it happen in the given society.

A social event happens not in the physical but in the social space, at a given moment in time. It is the result of an interpretation of one or more facts, generally of a spatio-temporal nature, and therefore with a geographical projection, that results in a change in the social space, i.e. in the representations of humans. A social event is carved out in a set of spatio-temporal events according to a given description, i.e. a corresponding social representation. These events provide the setting for the social event. E.g. the wedding celebration (the event) is the setting of the marriage (the social event) conceived as the transition from being (considered by a community as) single to being (considered as) married.

Examples:

The wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947, i.e. the social fact they got married, and the involved legal change in their status, not the spatio-temporal event (crm:E5 Event or sdhss:C33 Unitary Event class) of their wedding ceremony.

In First Order Logic:

  • C2(x) ⊃ C42(x)

Additional notes

Show Notes Language Namespace View details Comments Validation
The Social Event class is inspired by and modelled according to the foundational views of the Descriptions and Situations ontology, cf. Gangemi A. et al.,« From collective intentionality to intentional collectives: An ontological perspective. », Cogn. Syst. Res. 7, no 2‑3 (2006): 192‑208, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cogsys.2005.11.009. A social event is modelled here as a situation that interprets facts in the world reality according to descriptions, modelled in the context of social sciences as social representations. Thus, it corresponds to the ontology desing pattern DescriptionAndSituation. In this context, the P33 satisfies (is satisfied by) property, associating the Situation to the Description in which it becomes 'visible', associates the Social Event to the Social Representation class. The P43 has setting property, associating a social event with the event or events in the world, that are perceived as being the realization of a description, is equivalent to the SettingFor relation but expressed in the inverse direction. The associated perdurants in the ground ontology (here the CIDOC CRM) are the setting of the situation. en CIDOC CRM Top-Level Extension for Humanities and Social sciences (SDHSS) – ongoing 0 Candidate
