C49 Amount of Matter

Scope note:

This class comprises portions or bunches of one or more materials, like a sea, a pile of wood, the flour I just bought and is in this bag, and the milk in this bottle, whose form is provided by the container or is not stable enough to provide persistent unity to the entity, but suffices to provide some kind of identity and is the object of discourse "in an identifiable way for an identifiable minimal time-span." (crm:E18 Physical Thing, v. 7.1.2).

This class, gathering identifiable amounts of solid, liquid or gazeiform matter, is thus defined as a specialization of the crm:E18 Physical Thing class and inherits all its properties. It allows to capture the information available about ephemeral but identifiable amounts of matter.

Examples:

The mortar and bricks that makes up the wall, and will be transported and used to fill the hole of the old collapsed cistern

The sand sculpture I erected on the beach and on which I wrote a sentence for posterity, and which was destroyed by the tide after I took a picture of it, and which has now become the trademark of my consulting business

Context notes:

This class is conceptualised, in a foundational perspective, in reference to the DOLCE Amount of Matter class and therefore disjoint with the crm:E19 Physical Object and crm:E26 Physical Feature classes, while the crm:E18 Physical Thing class, the parent of the three former classes, corresponds to the Physical Endurant class in DOLCE.

In First Order Logic:

  • C49(x) ⇒ E18(x)
