View Epistemic Location of a Physical Thing - C15 in Displacements, movements and journeys ongoing profile

  • Scope note:

This class comprises locations of instances of the crm:E18 Physical Thing class and subclasses on or inside other physical things (usually geographical places, buildings, features or human made objects), intended as their situation during a given time span as it is known in a given social context as being essentially true even if some absences are possible.

This means that the provided location is generally observable during the intended time-span even if at some point in time the entity is to be found in another location, e.g. a person going for a walk in the countryside, or an antique vase being loaned to another museum for an exhibition. If one needs to express these localisations of shorter duration, other instances of this same class will be created.

Should the intended relative location be strictly physical, and not epistemic or social, the sdh:C41 Relative Location of a Physical Thing class should be used. To capture an official domicile, legal seat of an actor, etc. the sdh-so:C28 Legal Location of an Actor class must be used.

  • Examples:

On 24 April 2014, the Swiss Federal Council held its weekly meeting at the Château de Prangins near Nyon (the intended location is the one of the group not of the event).

On 22 July 1242, Saint Louis camped 7 km from Pons.

Galileo Galilei beeing in Rome in February 1616.

Justification of the selection in the profile

In the context of a Displacement, Trip or Journey profile the sdh:C15 Epistemic Location class is used to express information about stops and temporary stays. A person could stay in a town during a journey but at some moments be outside it, or a ship have a stopover in a harbour but leave it to maneuver or let other vessels unload their cargo.
